Continuing in the series of free guided hikes to explore Chester, Chester Recreation is featuring a Free Hawk Identification class with Dave Dean on Saturday, October 13th at 9:30 a.m. at Chester Borough Municipal Hall located at 50 North Rd, Chester NJ.

This free family-friendly class will begin with a 30-minute slide presentation at the Chester Borough Municipal Building, followed by a short question and answer period. Next we’ll continue to the top of Seward’s Hill for live hawk identification in the field. Bring your binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather. Scout troops are welcome to join us on this outdoor learning adventure!

Seward’s Hill is a nice location to view migratory hawks as they move along ridgelines. Mr. Dean will show how to properly set up and use binoculars, and then point out field markings to help identify birds.

On a historical note, Dave’s mother was an observer charged with spotting foreign enemy planes at Seward’s Hill during WWII. Seward’s Hill is the highest point in Chester with a view of NYC and features majestic views and diverse paths to explore. You are welcome to explore the area around Seward’s Hill on your own. Trail maps will be available; you can view and print them in advance at www.chestertrails.org.
