This is about a thirteen mile hike on three rail trails
near Newton, New Jersey. The hike is flat. Most of the
hike is an even gravel path. Expect some muddy spots
and some spots that are a bit rocky.

The hike is on the following rail trails:
The Paulinskill Valley Trail, the Great Valley Rail
Trail (the former Lehigh and New England Railroad),
and the Sussex Branch Trail. Each of these rail
trails is tens of miles long. We will hike only a
small fraction of each one. The Great Valley Rail
Trail has been open for about 2 years. The other
two trails have been open for more than a decade.

Additional information about the Paulinskill Valley Trail
and the Sussex Branch Trail are available on

The hike spends an equal amount of time on each of the
trails. The route is Warbasse Station to Swartswood Junction
on the Paulinskill Trail, then the Great Valley Trail to
the Sussex Branch Trail back to the Paulinskill trail and
then about 100 yards to the parking lot.

If there is rain in the a.m., we won’t go. If in doubt,
call Brian before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Bring water, good hiking boots, a trail lunch, trail snacks, and
rain gear.

Let us know if you plan to attend.
